FUN, FOOLISHNESS AND FRIVOLITY
Seems to me that I have been so reflective in my
monthly editorials that they have been rather heavy and somber,
especially the last three months. As we all know, the energy you
give out is the energy you get back. More importantly, the energy
you give out has an impact on everything around you. It may only be
a small pebble that you drop into the sea of life, but it will have
a ripple effect. Keeping this in mind, I want to shift focus for
this issue.
Let’s talk about the *F* word for a minute. We
always wish for joy and happiness in the New Year but what about
fun, humour and silliness. Happiness is a spectator sport –which
is why is it is a by-product of the way we live our lives. Fun, on
the other hand, is definitely a participation sport. You have to
make your own fun; otherwise it is just entertainment. And goodness
knows I can easily be entertained.
When was the last time you had a good belly laugh?
I know that it is hard for me to come up with something off the top
of my head, even though I know that I laugh a lot. I wonder it my
efforts of late have been simply passing time. Was it entertaining
– yes, but I don’t think I was conscious about making my own
fun. I let others take responsibility for it. Believe it or not, I
don’t think that I played enough in 2001.
So here is my own challenge for 2002 – to play
harder, laugh louder and enjoy every moment for all its wonder and
pleasure and magnificence. Here is my suggestion, don’t set goals
for yourself or make wishes this year. Instead, try to take a few
extra minutes each day to be silly and innocent and connected. This
can be accomplished in a million ways.
Life is serious, but never, never take yourself
too seriously.
