Tip for the Month: Sending E-mails

Did you know that the actual "tone" of your e-mail can make a difference? A recent study suggests that employees receive up to 60 e-mails per day! Keeping it short and polite means that the recipient is more likely to read it and respond.

  1. When writing an e-mail message, keep it short and sweet.
...Get to the point quickly, preferably in the "subject" line.
    ...Use a conversational, informal tone.
...Don;'t write in all CAPITAL letters.
    ...Keep your lines short.
    ...Break up your paragraphs.
...Watch your line length. Different "wrap" settings may mean that a line will go on and on! (72 characters per line is safe.)

  2. Think carefully about what you write or the humour you send. Remember, it's a permanent record. How would it look if it was printed in the newspaper?

  3. Spell check it before you send it and do one last verification on who will be receiving your e-mail.

  4. Don't assume it was read! It may not have been received.
